as has been the case for the past decade or so, my interest in comics ebbs and flows. that's not to say my interest in the medium of comics ebbs and flows, just my dedication to hitting the shop on wednesdays because i can't wait to get my hands on the latest issue of XYZ.
well, the have been a few titles that have been getting my juices flowing lately (ew), and here they are:
gi joe: cobra i've always been a 'joe fan, but this gritty, realistic take on some of the dark corners of that universe has been utterly fantastic. to give an example of how weird this title can be, chuckles has been the most prominently featured joe in the series so far. so there.
aliens v. predator: three world war rick leonardi's art rocks. and i love that they picked up the story from the original AvP series waaaaaay back in the early 90's. the raymond swanland covers rule as well.
avengers i don't quite get this "heroic age" that marvel's trotting out (is it an editorial decision or an actual event in the MU?), but this series has made good on the concept by taking the stories in the fantastical, universe-spanning direction that reminds me of the books of my youth. in other words, they made it fun again.
walkind dead ok, i'm not fully caught up yet (issue 69 or so), but i have been voraciously plowing through trades to see what sadistic torture robert kirkman has in store for his characters next. both touchingly human and brutally visceral, this book lives up to all of its hype.
Witchblade, X-men, Uncanny X-men - but Im looking for new and exciting stuff and btw heres an...sort of explanation that I found about the whole "heroic age" storyline: [link]
I'm not reading much anymore due to lack of "Mad Cash" for comics and other things that are not bills. What I can tell you are the books I lok for when I do have the money. = )
Atomic Robo: I've been a fan of Brian Clevinger's writing for a number of years. His comedy brought to life by Scott Wegener's art is probably one of the greatest indie teams I've seen in a while. Plus they're both really cool to chat with, too.
Joe the Barbarian: I finally found this book last week. Normally, it's sold out. After reading the first two issues, I understand why. An interesting fantasy tale made visually crazy with *seangordonmurphy's art. Definitely one to pick up.
The Underburbs: Came across this comic at WizardWorld Philly a couple of years back. Good art, good story. A comedy with monsters and humans. This one you'll probably have to order online as I don't think their book is sold in shops. You can get some more info here. -> ~Underburbs
Those are the only two I can think of that are regular series. I'm currently saving up for =SpookyChan's book, The God Machine. Interesting story, great art. Both of which you can preview here -> ~TheGodMachineComic
I'm with you in your shopping habits (Interest level), but recently got pulled back into monthly LCS visits by
Batgirl Written by Bryan Q. Miller and drawn up till now by Lee Garbett. Just an excellent regular-gal as superhero story. It's what Spider-man should be.
Thor: The Mighty Avenger Written by Roger Langdrige and Drawn beautifully by this is a story of a younger Thor that has been banished by Odin from Asgard and has to make do in Midgard. Along the way he meets (and fights, in old superhero tradition) a host of Marvel's heroes (including Giant Man and Wasp, Captain Britain and Mr. Hyde so far) super fun, and kind of continuity-free.
I agree, G.I. Joe Cobra was mind-blowing especially the last issue - great twist!
- G. I. Joe II is equally impressive so far, not finished. - Skottie Young's take on Oz has been a lot of fun. - I also just picked up Darwyn Cooke's Parker in hardback and that is truly a simplistic thing of beauty!
Hmm i am in the same boat when it comes to my interest in comics. They just don't make 'em like the comics of my youth.
That being said, i had no idea there was a GI Joe book out about Cobra...definitely going to find that (and i love Chuckles haha!)
The only book i'm reading on a regular basis right now is Invincible which is so awesome. I always look forward to it (i have to get in in the TPB since we don't have a big comic store here). The only "Big Two book" i'd be interested in picking up is Chris Samnee's Thor (with awesome colors by Matt Wilson). Although if Avengers is making it fun again i might have to check that out too!
Nemesis from Icon/Millerworld. Upto #3, cant stop re-reading it! Simple but realistic art from McNiven and McCaig, just great colours, very muted but great schemes. Story is what I've always wanted. Sadistic, clever and cool... Bringing Supervillians into a whole new world for me, they feel fresh again.
Sweet Tooth - written and drawn by Jeff Lemire is great.
And I second Scalped, Atomic Robo and add DMZ.
